Electricity in Port Blair
Workers at an electric grid in Port Blair
There is no single power grid for all the electrified islands in Andaman and Nicobar due to the geographical and topographical peculiarities of these islands such as separation by sea over great distances. Therefore, instead of a single power grid, the authority depends on a power house that caters to the power requirements of an area or island independently.
At present Andaman and Nicobar Islands homes 35 Diesel Power Houses at different areas of the islands and they have diesel generating sets of capacity that ranges from 6 KW to 5000 KW. Moreover, there is also one Hydro Power Station on Kalpong River at North Andaman, which has the capacity of 5.25 MW with total aggregate installed capacity of 64.05 MW. 696 km of 11 KV lines, 278 km of 33 KV lines, 2196 km of LT lines, 436 Nos. distribution transformers and 27 Nos. power transformers are the existing distribution network in Andaman and Nicobar Islands to provide power to nearly 70030 consumers in different categories and 11000 street lights in the islands.
Out of 547 villages in A & N Islands, 68 villages that are un-inhabited are not to be electrified and 479 villages are electrified through conventional electric supply and solar power plants. 311 villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that cover 92.4% of population have 24 hours power supply and 39 villages with 2% population have 5-16 hours power supply thorough conventional source of energy.
