Fairs and Festivals in Port Blair
Island FestivalThe Island festival is a fortnight long festival organized by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration with an aim of promoting tourism. As large number of tourists is visiting Andaman and Nicobar Islands during chilly winter season, this festival is conducted in Port Blair during December and January every year. This grand festival gives a festive look to the Islands. Exhibition of local handicraft items and display of collections of flora and fauna are the major attractions of this festival. Local people also await this festival eagerly, as it gives them an opportunity to explore their craftmanship to the world.
Local Dance, music and drama performances of talented artists, who are residing in different islands and are coming from various corners of the world add more charm to Island festival. Tourists get an opportunity to watch the high level performances of traditional art forms of India in this festival. The authorities also arrange some other interesting events in the festivals like baby show, magic show, dog show, puppet show, floating restaurant, water sports competition etc.
The exhibition organized during the festival highlights the developmental aspects of the islands and private entrepreneurs as well as govt. agencies attend this exhibition. In short, the image of the islands as an eco-friendly tourist spot is projected in Island festival.
Vivekananda MelaVivekananda Mela is organized in January every year with an aim of celebrating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. This one day celebration organized in Neil Island is a cultural festival.
Subhash MelaSubhash Mela is organized every year on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. This festival, which lasts for a week, is conducted in Havelock in the month of January every year. It is cultural festival that is filled with different types of cultural programmes.
Block MelaBlock Mela is organized to highlight the developments that have been happened in the rural areas. The festival that is held at Diglipur during January/ February every year displays the typical rural life of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
There is no doubt that all these festivals will be a visual treat to the people who come from other places, especially foreigners. It also provides an opportunity to know more about the historic and cultural specialties of Andaman Islands.
