Regional Medical Research Centre

The Regional Medical Research Centre, Port Blair, was established in 1983 with an aim of carrying out biomedical research in both communicable and non-communicable diseases in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar. It is one of the six regional centers of the Council. It also focuses on the health related problems of the local tribes in the islands and tries to introduce better technologies using local manpower. During the last two five-year plans, Regional Medical Research centre could made rapid strides towards winning its set objectives and thereby recognize its identity.

Mission and Vision of Regional Medical Research Centre

Regional Medical Research centre, Port Blair was started functioning in 1983 April 1 at a rented accommodation at Aberdeen Bazar, Port Blair with very limited laboratories facilities clinical functions. The growth and development of this centre from such a primitive stage to the current status is really appreciable. The field station of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata, which was operating at Port Blair till 1983, was later emerged with the RMRC.

Regional Medical Research Centre has a significant role in the National context. In addition to this, the centre also has to meet its original responsibilities as the regional biomedical research center of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Therefore, it conducts many research programmes on various communicable and non-communicable diseases. All these researches are significant to the islands of Andaman and Nicobar from public points of view.

Activities of Regional Medical Research Centre

The research conducted by the centre is usually on the diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, diarrhoeal diseases, vector-borne diseases and other chronic non-communicable diseases and nutrition. It is a designated WHO Collaborating Centre for Research, Diagnosis, Reference and Training in Leptospirosis. Research on psycho-social issues such as alcoholism and post-traumatic stress syndrome occurred by natural calamities like tsunami and earthquake are also conducted by the centre. It collects and organizes information on traditional medicine and folklore practices of the aborigines on sea weeds and medicinal plants and their medicinal properties.

Regional Medical Research Centre conducts doctoral programmes in Entomology and Microbiology by affiliating to Puducherry University. Training programmes in Laboratory Diagnostic Procedures of Leptospirosis are also carried out here regularly. Apart from this, the centre also organizes several seminars, workshops or symposia on different aspects of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
