Government of Andaman and Nicobar Islands take care the well-being of society by implementing various schemes and projects. Apart from this, there are many social organizations and NGOs who are doing many appreciable and remarkable services to the locals in the Islands. All these organizations and charitable trusts are motivated and controlled by the common people with common interest.
Andaman & Nicobar Administration Old Age Assistance Rules that came into force in 1982 has an aim of providing social and financial security to the old and disabled people who have nobody to support them financially. The Government here also gives scholarship to handicapped students, unemployment allowance, financial assistance under self-employment, financial assistance for better treatment at mainland hospital and permanent disability allowance etc.
One Rehabilitation Center under National Programme for Rehabilitation of Person with Disabilities (NPRPD) has been established under the direction of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India. There is also a District Disabled Rehabilitation here functioning in collaboration with NIOH. One Juvenile Justice Board has been working at Port Blair, which is for the entire district for the juveniles in conflicts with laws.
With an aim of ensuring services to the Children of unprivileged working parents he social welfare department in Andaman and Nicobar provide nutritious food to the children at day time through Day Care Centres. There are sufficient numbers of Anganwadis functioning here with an aim of providing early childhood care and education to the children. In addition to the schemes and projects carried out under the direct control of the Government, the Social Welfare department here also provide grant-in-aid to voluntary organizations namely Seva Niketan, Port Blair and R.K Mission, Port Blair for maintaining orphan children.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is free from the danger of beggars. Administration is keeping a close watch on the floating population from the mainland in order to stop the practice of begging in this union territory. Social welfare department in Port Blair also focus the overall well-being of women by establishing various projects for employed women, widows, economically backward women etc.
The Government and other social service organizations in Port Blair are well aware about their role of social welfare in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and they have succeeded in their goal up to an extent.
